The Last Platform
TikTok increasingly feels like the final frontier
Some readers might remember that I started a TikTok page last year and was briefly obsessed with the app:
At that time, I had to push beyond the stereotype that it was all about dancing, that it was a childish place that rewarded superficiality. I stopped using TikTok a few months after that because of how difficult it was to produce videos. I’m not a video editor and the app’s tools had a bit of a learning curve. I was also fatigued from having to navigate so many social media platforms while things were simultaneously opening up and I had live shows to focus on.
My DJ and good pal Josephine a.k.a Jayemkayem inspired me to get back into the game and recommended that I check out this app called Splice that makes the video editing component much easier. Once I figured that out, it was off to the races again. What I’m noticing this time around is how easy it is to learn about new music on there. It’s gotta be the best music discovery platform in the history of the world. Link up with the right trend and you’re exposed to countless potential fans. I’ve come across so many wonderful songs just from scrolling along. I tapped into what I was enjoying on the app and found a way to reflect that in my own posts. This was the result:
I was noticing a lot of hype for an unreleased Fred again.. collaboration from his fabulously joyful Boiler Room performance. It was a song featuring Skrillex, Four Tet and Flowdan called “Rumble” and the algorithm was pushing it onto my feed with great persistence. I decided to post a TikTok that recommended other similar tracks last Thursday. In less than a week, it already has over 180,000 views and has gained me over 700 new followers.
