Listen to “SENNA (Remix)” featuring Logan on all streaming platforms
“SENNA" (Remix)” is out everywhere! This is the first drop from the upcoming deluxe edition of Parallel World which features six new reimaginings of my songs from some of my favourite artists and producers: Loraine James, CFCF, Harrison, Martyn Bootyspoon and Ciel.
The “SENNA” remix features UK grime rapper Logan who has been a mainstay on my playlist over the past year. “SENNA” was originally created with classic grime in mind so I thought it would be sick to get the hottest grime artist of the moment on the remix. He absolutely smashed it. Hearing him use my flow at the end of his verse got me super hyped!!
Can’t wait for you all to hear the rest of the remixes we have on deck. Parallel World (Deluxe Edition) drops on March 25. You can pre-order the remixes on Bandcamp here:
Listen to “Airplanes” with Busty and the Bass on all streaming platforms
I wrote the lyrics for “Airplanes” after spending several days on Toronto Island last summer while writing my book at Artscape Gibraltar Point. One night a random guy pulled up to the beach with a full PA system and I grabbed the aux cord and played some tracks for folks to dance to. There was something freeing about being able to have a good time without having to pay for it.
It made me think of how few opportunities I typically have to do that. I also felt pleasantly disconnected from the outside world while I was on the island. I feel obligated to work as hard as possible at all times, as capitalism has weakened the boundaries between free time and working hours. Linking up with Montreal band Busty and the Bass, we wrapped up some of these themes into a banging summer jam. Really stoked on this one!
This is a new single that I produced for my good friend Cam Maclean. He occasionally plays guitar with me at live shows and is a meditative and emotive singer songwriter who reminds me of Nick Drake. Keep your eyes peeled for his album Secret Verses that I produced as well. This is my first time producing a record for someone else. It was quite interesting to work on something that was totally different than the music I usually make. Hoping for more opportunities to get my Quincy Jones on in the future.
Ever since I won the Polaris Music Prize last year, there’s been a sudden interest in looking back on my career. Here’s a few recent pieces in that vein:
This CKUA Hidden Track podcast was such a joy to take part in and listen to. CKUA has been so supportive of my music over the years. The detail they went into my career here is staggering. They interviewed folks who worked on my earliest music, my uncle and even my mom! If you wanna get the scoop on how my career started, check it out
Senator Paula Simons had me on her podcast Alberta Unbound for a discussion of my Edmonton roots where I talked about my family and my pride for Alberta
I wrote this piece for CBC Black on the Prairies called “The Prairies Got Something To Say” and the presentation they put together for it is incredible. A feature-rich production that includes family photos, live performance video and snippets of my music, it’s one of the coolest projects I’ve been involved with
Oh yeah and I know it’s not “year end season” anymore but I was stunned to recently learn that Parallel World was on AllMusic’s Best of 2021 list! Take it from the most trustworthy review site on the web: your boy is lit as a MFer
Speaking of Alberta, I’ll be back in Calgary on February 19 for Block Heater Festival. My first live performance of the year! Can’t wait to get out there and rock the stage again. I’ll also be taking part in an online panel connected to the festival on February 17. You can get more info about the show on the Block Heater website
