Parallel World (Deluxe Edition) is out now! Remixes by CFCF, Loraine James, Martyn Bootyspoon, Ciel, Logan_olm and Harrison that take Parallel World to an alternate reality. I’ve always wanted to do a remix album like this, having appreciated reimagining other tracks myself over the years and I specifically wanted to have remixers who I feel are really groundbreaking and pushing barriers. I find these new takes add a different dimension to the songs in some clever ways.
The “SENNA” remix features UK grime rapper Logan, fully bringing that song’s grime homage to its logical endpoint. Harrison’s version of “Play No Games” is a jazz-funk odyssey that couldn’t possibly be more different from the original’s futuristic electronics. When I was thinking of an artist to remix “Skyline,” Ciel was the first person I thought of because of her outspoken political presence on Twitter. Her “Renoviction Refix” perfectly encapsulates the anxiety and paranoia of living in John Tory’s Toronto.
I asked Martyn Bootyspoon to make a club version of our track “Africville’s Revenge” and he came through with a blistering Chicago acid house workout that I can’t wait to play out next time I DJ somewhere. Loraine James’s remix of “On Me” really surprised me when I first heard it. She has this knack for making music in a way that is truly unique, I don’t think it sounds like anything else out there. Finally, CFCF’s take on “Connect” is truly beautiful. It’s an emotional electro jam that totally computerizes my vocals. Mike really tapped into the vulnerability behind the song. He somehow also managed to predict the sonic direction I plan to go in on my next album with his remix.

Sorry I haven’t been posting as much! I was just in Los Angeles for a month working on my next album. Made some nice progress, went to Erewhon a few times. Right after that was SXSW which was mostly an exercise in eating tacos. I returned to Toronto last weekend and all week I’ve been recording the audiobook version of my upcoming memoir, Bedroom Rapper. If you haven’t done so already, you can pre-order the book here.
