My 2012 album Hope In Dirt City was originally a concept album inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s Nausea. I was gonna call the album Roquentin, named after the protagonist of the book. Perhaps I was having an existential crisis at the time. There are still vague connections to the book on the final album but there were more explicit examples that were left on the cutting room floor. “The Doctor” is a direct reference to Dr. Rogé from the book, blended in with personal nods to a couple semi-requited romances and allusions to Edmontonian bar-dwelling.
