I’ve been getting messages for years from people asking for an updated version of my 2017 Edmonton hockey anthem “Connor McDavid.” I guess this is the way that Apple must feel between iOS updates. After watching the Oilers finally return to the Stanley Cup Finals last Sunday, I was inspired to record a new version of the song featuring references to players from the current roster.
I rewrote it on Monday and posted a little video of myself performing it:
I headed to Dream House Studios in Toronto to link up with my engineer Calvin Hartwick the next night, where we recorded, mixed and mastered the new version of the track in a couple hours. We sent it to MNRK Music Group early on Wednesday AM, while I previewed it at the same time live on CBC Edmonton’s morning radio show. And the track will be available on all platforms on Friday at midnight. This idea was just a twinkle in my eye at the beginning of the week.
This is the fastest turnaround I’ve ever had for any song I’ve made. It’s been a wild, frantic experience but it’s been incredibly fun as well. I just wanted to make sure that the fans back home had a new version of this Oilers anthem to play in their trucks, at the Moss Pit and around Edmonton as we approach this monumental championship series. Let’s go Oilers!
Have a listen to the new version before the rest of the world. This preview link is only available for the next 24 hours so check it out below:
