What is a year-end list for? Rather than a method of creating consensus, they’ve become a vehicle for publications to show you the way in which they wish to appear culturally or politically aligned. You see this with the Obama lists throughout the year as well. Posting a list has become a branding exercise, the adjacency to coolness acquired from being a knowledgeable music fan writ large in one massive annual display.
Personally, I have no agenda. This is just something I’ve done every year for as long as I can remember, whether it was on Substack, Pitchfork, Xanga, direct to my friend’s emails or wherever. I listen to a ridiculous amount of music every year and I’m always excited to share the songs that resonated most with me with as many people as possible. I hope you enjoy the results.
